Teacher urges parents to keep their kids engaged

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

For you parents of students, with the end of the school year approaching, it can be a tough time to keep your child focused on school. An Atlanta high school teacher says she knows how to keep our kids on track.

Franchesca Lane-Warren teaches English at South Atlanta High School. She says towards the end of the school year, students try to check out early. Warren says to keep your child's interest you need to keep them engaged.

"Discuss what's happening on the news. Read something together, and ask them what do you think about it. So reading is fundamental for a child's success," said Warren.

Reading with your child every night not only supports their academic success, it gives you an indication of their comprehension level. For a more specific picture of the progress, Warren says have a clear line communication with your children's teachers.

"Parents need to make sure that they are in contact with their child's teacher. That just means a simple phone call or an email, stopping by the school. Just to let them know that you're available and you are there to help your child," Warren said.

Though the end of the year is fast approaching, it's not too late. Warren says now is a good time to have a frank conversation about what your child must to do to pass or catch up. Teachers mean the world to a child's success, but parents mean more.

"And I think when we understand that, kids will be a lot more successful, because every child wants their parent to care about school," said Warren.

A long-time educator, Warren has written a book for teachers on avoiding burnout. For more information, click here!
