Spring smiles down on Chicago

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Sunny skies and temperatures in the 60's attracted droves of people to the city including Margaret Hair from Lombard who spent the afternoon soaking up the sun on Oak Street Beach.

"We got our bikes and came out here for the afternoon and we can't leave the lakefront until that sun goes away, it's beautiful," said Margaret Hair, a Lombard resident.

For the first time, in a long time the lakefront was filled with sunshine and people instead of puddles.

"This April has been terrible, it's the first day I haven't worn my winter coat," said Hair.

The Wheaton College Swim Team traded their scarves and hats for swimsuits.

"We love spending time outside so we're really happy that it's warm outside," said Laura Westfall, a student.

The group splashed their way across Lake Michigan after jumping off the pier into near freezing water.

"We instantly went numb and then we became warm so we might as well have just stayed in there so yeah, it was fun," said Mark McLaughlin, a student.

Fun in the sun was highlighted by a busy bike path, jogging, sand castles, yoga, alfresco dining in Old Town and even a beach volleyball game in full swing on a Saturday afternoon.

"Two weeks ago it was snowing and I was like what the heck is happening so yeah, this is great," said Stanley Zheng.

More than a month after Spring started, Chicagoans are finally enjoying its benefits after the wettest April on record was underscored by atypically cool temperatures.

"It's wonderful. This is the first time it's been like this, this entire year and I'm excited for the summer," said Zheng.
