DC leaders respond to Florida congressman's budget autonomy comments

WASHINGTON -

Many people across the area are talking about comments made Thursday by Florida Congressman John Mica.

Just days after D.C voters went to the polls to approve a ballot measure to give D.C. leaders control of their own budget, Mica gave an interview to FOX 5 that some considered insulting and disrespectful.

Rep. Mica compared giving budget autonomy to District residents to giving budget autonomy to his children.

"Well, when my kids were young teenagers, they always wanted budget autonomy too," said Mica.

Mica later said, "As long as they are minding their P's and Q's, so to say, I think the government can back off. But we must remain vigilant."

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton watched the FOX 5 report and said, "It seemed to be very awkward. He's never been a D.C. basher."

Norton called Mica on the phone.

"So I asked him straight out: Did he mean to compare District leaders and residents to children or young teenagers? And he said absolutely not, and if he had, that would have been insulting."

FOX 5 made several attempts to reach Rep. Mica on Friday. His office did not respond to our request for comment.
