TROY, Mich. (WJBK) -

Behind-the-wheel of a specially-equipped Dodge Caravan, a paraplegic crashed through a guardrail and onto the roadway below.

It was a horrible chain of events that started in the northbound lanes of I-75 in Troy and ended with the van going airborne and landing on Maple Road some 20 feet below.  Crews rushed to save the man trapped in the wreckage.

A 63-year-old man from Rochester Hills who was already facing serious challenges is now in critical condition.

"We do know he is paraplegic, and he was using hand controls to operate the vehicle," said Sergeant Andy Breidenich with Troy Police.

What police don't know is what caused him to lose control around 9:40 p.m. Thursday.

The victim has many broken bones and other injuries.

"It was quite unbelievable that with traffic on Maple Road that no other vehicle were involved or even struck by debris," Breidenich remarked.

Police said the victim tried to talk to them at the scene, but they couldn't understand what he was saying.

"It was inaudible.  He did have extensive injuries, and he was unable to communicate with us exactly what occurred," Breidenich explained.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the accident to contact them.
