Jereme Richmond, fmr. Mr. Basketball, back in jail

WAUKEGAN, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Bond was set at $250,000 Friday for a former north suburban basketball star who is back in jail for refusing to submit to a drug test earlier this week, the Lake County News-Sun is reporting.

Jereme Richmond of Waukegan is also accused of making indirect threats against his probation officer on Thursday when he went in for drug testing.

He allegedly told his probation officer to "be safe" and of using his fingers to simulate shooting his probation officer with a gun.

"We're maintaining his innocence ... I told the judge we can't fight (the officer's) imagination," Richmond's attorney Lawrence Wade said.

Richmond, charged with harassment of a witness, could spend up to seven years in prison if convicted. He had been serving 18 months of probation for bringing a loaded gun to his ex-girlfriend's Waukegan home in August 2011. As a condition, he must report to his probation officer and pass drug screenings.

He plays semi-professional basketball for the Sauk Valley Predators in Sterling, Ill., and was allowed to travel out of Lake County and out of state to play with the team.

Richmond had a checkered history of complying with probation terms. He tested positive for drugs last fall, and also failed to attend a treatment class — he was ordered to attend substance abuse and domestic violence treatment.

But Richmond had gotten himself on track and was in compliance with all his terms. He has not missed a class since the first time it happened, Wade said.

"He was doing everything right. We felt he had a fair chance of getting to probation termination," Wade said.

Richmond is due back in court for bond review May 1. He remains in custody at the Lake County Jail.

He was charged with aggravated battery and unlawful use of a weapon for the August 2011 incident. The aggravated battery charge was dropped after he pleaded guilty to the weapons charge.

Richmond helped lead the Waukegan Bulldogs to two Final Four state championship games when he was in high school. He also played basketball at University of Illinois, but was not picked after he declared for NBA draft.
