Emanuel praises success of police foot patrols

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Mayor Emanuel said Thursday that new police foot patrols are already helping to reduce the murder rate in several violent neighborhoods.

One is the area around 79th and Langley. The mayor and Police Supt. Garry McCarthy visited Thursday, as dozens of officers hovered nearby. Last month, 24 were assigned to routine foot patrols in that section of the Gresham Police District, part of a citywide anti-crime strategy that officials said has cut crime to a level not seen since 1959.

"Shootings are down," Mayor Emanuel said. "171 fewer shootings. 65 fewer homicides, just this year alone. Property crimes are down 10%."

"We're getting a handle on the violence," Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said. "The gang issue is a cultural issue. Don't expect the Police Department to fix the gang issue. That takes community. That takes all the things that the mayor is talking about. As far as changing the culture and reducing the violence, we're absolutely getting a hand on that."

At this time last year, Chicago had already seen 153 murders, compared to 88 so far this year.
