DC officials respond to school closing lawsuit

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

District of Columbia officials are responding to a lawsuit over the closure of 15 schools, saying their plan was the result of extensive study and will improve education for all students.

Lawyers for the city filed court documents Wednesday in response to a lawsuit by a community group seeking to stop the closures. The lawsuit claims the closings will disproportionately affect minority, special education and low-income students.

In their response, lawyers for the city argue the five people suing with support from Empower DC don't have standing to bring the lawsuit. They say the group is connected to less than half of the schools scheduled for closure. Lawyers also say school officials gave proper notice of the closings and responded to citizen concerns.
