Man dies after Evanston house fire

EVANSTON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A house fire in the 1900 block of Hartrey Avenue claimed the life of one man Wednesday, according to officials in the northern suburb.

Fred Davis, a retired city employee, was pronounced dead after being transported to an area hospital, according to fire department and city officials.

Evanston Fire Department personnel responded to the fire in the 1900 block of Hartrey Avenue, shortly after 5 p.m., City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz said in an email. At about 5:45 p.m., Bobkiewicz reported that the fire was under control and that a single victim had been transported to a hospital in critical condition.

At 6:15 p.m., Bobkiewicz sent another email simply stating, "Injured man died at hospital."

According to neighbors, Davis lived alone and suffered from diabetes.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office has been notified of the fatality as of Wednesday evening, but could provide not immediately provide further details.
