(FOX 11) UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, Jon Jones said he is now open to a super-fight with the man he calls his idol in Anderson Silva.
Jones, who in the past said he wouldn't want a fight with the middleweight king, told Fox 11's James Koh he now sees it as a "huge opportunity."
"I would be just as happy to not fighting Anderson Silva but fighting Anderson Silva is such a huge opportunity for me to become the greatest martial artist of all time and that's a tempting thing to think about," Jones said. "Only god knows what's going to happen in the future but there is a lot of upside for me to fight Anderson Silva."
In addition to adding to his own legacy, Jones cited Silva's fights with Chael Sonnen as reasons being more open to fighting "The Spider."
"Anderson is an idol of mine, he'll always be someone I respect and look up to, even if I fight him in the future," Jones said. "But to get to your question, I've studied the Anderson Silva – Chael Sonnen fight a lot and seeing him in that state has really made me believe more how possible it is to defeat such an amazing legend."
Regarding Sonnen, Jones gave his take on the West Linn native who has been ramping up his trash talk over the past few weeks despite being mostly positive and jovial towards Jones while on The Ultimate Fighter reality show.
"The real Chael Sonnen is the guy you saw on The Ultimate Fighter show and the real Chael Sonnen is also the guy all over the media acting crazy, it's both guys," Jones said. "If you guys have been seeing The Ultimate Fighter you've seen him passionately coaching these fighters and giving real-life advice, bringing up how he loves his mama. That's the real Chael Sonnen, he's a decent dude."
"When a fight comes up, he has this ideal of promoting a fight and he has this psychology of saying whatever he needs to say to get people to tune in and it's working," Jones said. "I'm just going to focus on winning fights and that's how I promote myself. If people want to see some devastation and domination, tune in. If you want to see this guy making all these bold statements lose, tune in."
"I'm excited about this fight because I get to go out there and beat up on someone who's been talking a lot of trash and one step closer to becoming one of the pound-for-pound best fighters," Jones said.
