New charges in LA County assessor corruption case

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Prosecutors have filed more than 50 new charges in the bribery case involving the Los Angeles County assessor and two others.

The district attorney's office filed an amended criminal complaint Tuesday against John Noguez, his top aide Mark McNeil and Arizona tax consultant Ramin Salari.

All three pleaded not guilty to the counts, which include misappropriating public funds, theft and bribery.

Prosecutors contend that Salari bribed Noguez and others to lower assessments for property owned by Salari's clients, lowering their tax bills by nearly $10 million.

The three could face dozens of years in prison each if convicted. Authorities also will try to seize $9 million in assets from Salari.

A former county appraiser, Scott Schenter, is being tried in a separate corruption case.
