Opening statements in contaminated-water trial

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

The attorney for a former suburban Chicago water official accused of lying about how the village drew drinking water from a tainted well argues she was a small cog in a machine.

Former Crestwood water department head Theresa Neubauer has pleaded not guilty to lying to regulators over 20 years about piping in the polluted water to the village. The water supplemented Crestwood's supply from Lake Michigan.

The SouthtownStar reports defense attorney Jonathan Brayman argued Tuesday that when Neubauer was being questioned by investigators, "she didn't have all the answers." He said that's because she didn't attend closed door meetings of top officials.

Federal prosecutor Erika Csicsila characterized Neubauer as an integral player in the scheme. She said it was Neubauer's responsibility to make sure the water was safe.
