As Earth Day arrives, here are some tips to help the environment

WASHINGTON -

She's in the city but Kristin Brower is standing in the middle of a giant garden in Northeast D.C.

Brower is with the Neighborhood Farm Initiative, a non-profit that teaches adults how to garden. They produce 2,000 pounds of food a year. Most of it gets donated.

"When you're growing your own food, you have the ability to control whatever is happening for it," says Brower.

Growing your own food is one way to help the environment. Experts say another is to eat less meat. Five years ago, a United Nations report said 18 percent of greenhouse gases come from raising animals for food.
