Arizona State holds election on mascot costume

Posted: Updated:

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Arizona State University students and others associated with the Tempe-based university begin voting Monday to choose among options for updating the Sparky mascot's costume.

The election that runs through May 5 is in response to controversy over the updated version of the costume that was unveiled March 1.

The online ballot features four versions of the new costume with varying changes to the head and face.

The university says students, faculty, staff, alumni and fans can vote online at sparky.asu.edu.

The university's announcement of the election says the final voting options were selected by university leaders in coordination with student and alumni leaders and others.

Results are to be announced May 7.
