Mail-Slot Burglaries Prompt Changes In South Philly

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Brazen burglars have found a new way to break into homes in Philadelphia – by going through, of all things, the mail slot.

This is an ongoing issue that police say is something to look out for.

This has happened three times in the same South Philadelphia neighborhood just in the past week.

And twice the homeowners came face to face with the intruder.

Police say a robber broke into this home on Mountain Street last week through the mail slot.

The burglar unscrewed the gold plate, took it off, then reached in, unlocked and opened the door.

Once inside, he rummaged around, all while a woman, her daughter and her two grandchildren slept upstairs.

The family is now making some changes.

"They probably got in, and when they opened this the alarm must have gone off," one victim, Rita DeClerico, told FOX 29 News. "You have 30 seconds. And so that's when it went off, and they must have ran out then."

"I put a steel plate on the inside so that nobody's getting in," said another break-in victim, Nick Ruggiero. "You can't unscrew it. You're not going to be able to push it out, should they try. And I had them put a mailbox outside with a lock."

So far, no one has been hurt. The other mail slot burglaries happened on Cross Street and on American Street in South Philly.

Police say they only have vague descriptions of the intruder.

FOX 29's Joyce Evans has more details in the video report above.
