Missing boy back at home after alleged parental abduction

FAIRFAX, Va. -

It has been a harrowing ordeal. For two weeks police conducted a nationwide search for 5-year-old Cameron Serafin, after his father reported him missing and expressed concern for his welfare.

Joe Serafin said he believed his ex-wife, Rebecca had abducted the boy and said she had a heroin abuse problem. Court records showed she also had a history of arrests and convictions for prescription fraud. A picture taken of the woman and her son at a bank showed their appearances had been altered. His father told FOX-5 he thought the mother was headed to California to pursue a career as an actress. Cameron and his mother were spotted last week at the airport in Birmingham, Alabama.

Fairfax County police say they got a credible tip later from someone who had seen a television story and recognized the two at a hotel in Las Vegas. Police checked out surveillance video from that hotel and later found them at another nearby hotel.

Joe Serafin immediately flew out to Vegas and brought his son back home. He says he wants to thank police for their efforts and the media for keeping the story alive. Rebecca Serafin remains behind bars in Vegas, awaiting extradition to Fairfax County on a felony charge of parental abduction.
