Crews were called to help a man who collapsed while hiking Saturday morning.
Firefighters say the 62-year-old was with a church group on South Mountain when something went wrong.
When crews arrived at the scene, members of the church group were performing CPR on the man.
Paramedics continued their live saving efforts during a flight to an area hospital.
Friends of the man say he was an experienced hiker and was drinking water throughout the hike.
The man's name was not released.
