Firefighter gets new lease on life after transplant surgery

PHOENIX -

It was a great day for Tim Maronay, a retired Oregon firefighter with a new lease on life.

"Once I got home, walking, swimming, next thing I know, I'm hiking, looking for all the mountains around here," he said.

On Friday, he thanked the entire St. Joseph's Hospital team -- a year after his lung transplant. It's his new birthday.

"This month marks my one year.  My new birthday.  It's a good way to celebrate my first birthday," he said.

"What this has taught us.. to take each day, make it a good day, 'cause you never know," said Jill Maroney.

Tim was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at age 16.  25 years later, it changed his life.  He was unconscious with his family making medical decisions to save him or pull him off the ventilator.

St. Joseph's doctors say it's miraculous he's alive today.

"It's incredible to see him doing so well and see his family and him doing the things he used to do and see him with his new lease on life..it's just amazing," said Jasmine Huang, a head surgeon at St. Joseph's.

"To see them brings back memories, it's just wonderful," said Tim.
