A FOX 5 exclusive takes us inside an abandoned building that used to house the Special Operations Division of the D.C. Police Department.
Acting on a tip, FOX 5's Paul Wagner and his crew went to the building in Northwest D.C. to take a look and found several open windows, an unlocked door and numerous sensitive documents left behind.
The Special Operations Division abandoned the building in November of last year and moved its headquarters to RFK Stadium.
We were told that since then, homeless people had made their way inside and were using it for shelter.
There was no obvious evidence homeless people had been living in the building, although there are still several couches which could have been used as beds. The building still has power.
After we left the building, I called the SOD commander and told him what we had found. Within 15 minutes, uniformed officers had arrived and had begun to secure the facility, putting up crime scene tape and inspecting the exterior.
I reached out to D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier and she gave us this statement: "Paul, honestly it would not be the first time that someone at MPD staged something like this and then tipped off the press. However, of course I am going to look into it."
