Troy students welcome back principal who ran in Boston Marathon

TROY, Mich. (WJBK) -

Students at a suburban Detroit elementary school welcomed back their principal from Boston Wednesday, just days after the horrific attack near the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

Dr. Pam Mathers was just a half mile away from the finish line when two devices exploded only seconds apart, killing three and injuring 176.

"I just feel so horrible for the tragedies in people's lives who were there," said Mathers, who trained all winter for her first Boston Marathon. "It was a beautiful day; a beautiful celebration that turned into such tragedy."

Although a cowardly act prevented Mathers from crossing the finish line, the students and staff at Hamilton Elementary School more than made up for it. They lined the halls and created their "finish line" in the school's media center for Mathers to cross.

"I was just so happy for her that she was able to do this," said fourth grader Ryan Smalley.

"They really just warm your heart," said Mathers.
