Nassau disputes crime report

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Nassau County's Police Commissioner is blasting a report that stated that major crime has increased in two of the three Nassau County police precincts that merged last year in a cost-cutting measure.

Newsday compared figures from Jan. 1 to April 1 of this year and the same period last year.

It says major crime went up nearly 19% at Nassau's northwest precinct. It went up nearly 11% at the southwest precinct.

The opposite occurred at the northeast precinct, where major crime is down by nearly 15%.

PBA President James Carver says the figures validate the union's concerns that the mergers would increase crime.

But the department says county crime is at such low levels that just a handful of incidents can drive a percentage increase.

Commissioner Tom Dale says that Newsday used misleading crime statistics that inaccurately portrayed the state of Nassau County.

Dale says that criminal cases are down by 652 cases year-to-date for the county and that crime is down more than 10% since County Executive Mangano took office three years ago.

He also says that there are the same number of police cars patrolling Nassau County streets since before the precinct consolidation.

Dale also says that major crime across the county is down .29% this year and total crime is down 8%.
