They are four elite athletes. They have finished at least 100 marathons combined.

Howard County's Tatyana McFadden and her teammates from the University of Illinois completed the Boston Marathon on Monday. Tatyana won the wheelchair division.

They were back at the hotel when they got the sense that something was wrong.

"We were just kind of hanging out, and instantly, this group of people sprint down the escalators. You could see they were freaking out," says Susannah Scaroni.

McFadden, Scaroni, Amanda McGrory, and Aaron Pike and their teammates rushed to leave the city. People they didn't know helped them. Each of the 14 Illinois racers had two wheelchairs, plus luggage.

"Strangers. I was sending suitcases down with people that I didn't really know," says McFadden.

They got on a flight and made it to Maryland, where they spent the night at McFadden’s house in Howard County.

On Tuesday night, they fly to England for this weekend's London Marathon. They are not scared.

"In the face of something that seems very negative and life-changing, there is always something positive that you can see,” says Scaroni. “Always live a life to the fullest going after everything that you love.”
