NORMAL, Ill. (AP) - Illinois State has hired former Saint Louis University associate head coach Barb Smith as its head women's basketball coach.

The school introduced Smith on Monday. She takes over for Stephanie Glance who resigned to become head coach at Columbia.

Smith said in a statement that she's happy to take over a program with a history of winning.

The Redbirds were 24-11 this season. They were 13-5 in the Missouri Valley Conference and made the Women's National Invitational Tournament.

Smith was head coach at San Diego State from 1997-2002 and has worked as an assistant at Minnesota, California and Colorado.

She played college basketball at Ohio State.
