Tim Skubick: Bart Stupak's out... for now

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) -

Bart's out.

For now.

If Upper Peninsula Democrat Bart Stupak had to decide today, he would not seek his party's nomination for governor. He has spent the last month or so mulling over his decision but just like three years ago, when he was in another mulling-mode about wanting to be governor, he will not pull the trigger barring some unforeseen development within his party which might re-open the door.

Read on.

The former Congressman will not confirm any of this, but it can be reported that party players were telling him he would have been a strong candidate to run in the general election against incumbent Gov. Rick Snyder.

The only problem was, if he ran, there would have been a Democratic primary battle and party insiders want to avoid that at all cost.

How could they predict someone else might take on Snyder?

Two words: pro-life.

The conservative leaning former state cop and former state lawmaker is anti-abortion. If he got into the race, some pro-choicer would have likely gotten in, too. Tons of money would be spent. Money that could be stock-pilled to take on Mr. Snyder.

A pitched battle between Mr. Stupak and ? might get nasty as charges could fly every which way, leaving the winner badly bruised for the fall encounter with the GOP standard-bearer.

Party players looked at the political calculus and figured the numbers didn't ad up.

So Mr. Stupak is out, but....

It appears now that the nomination is moving in the direction of Mark Schauer who is being strongly urged to run. In fact one person, who has not talked with the former Battle Creek Congressman, goes so far as to predict he will get the nod. Mr. Schauer has not said anything other than he is exploring the possibility.

However if somehow this reported boomlet for Mr. Schauer falls flat, Mr. Stupak could reconsider. So for now he watches from the sidelines.

You've heard the phrase "talk something to death." Turns out in the legislative arena and the attempt to ban minors from using E-Cigs, you can apparently talk something to life, too.
