The Minnesota State Patrol opened eastbound Interstate 94 after exit 24 near Barnesville at 1:30 a.m. Monday. It was closed after three semi-trailers crashed and formed a barrier to traffic on Sunday afternoon.

Troopers say one of the three semis was hauling about two dozen pigs, and another was hauling cattle. Several of the pigs escaped the overturned trailer, and troopers warned travelers that it will take some time to round them all up.

In the meantime, all eastbound lanes of I-94 and the ramp from Highway 34 remain temporarily closed.

Sgt. Jesse Grabow said the cattle were trapped inside the semi and did not escape; however, the pigs could be seen grazing in a snowy area in a photo he released on Twitter.

Responders constructed a temporary enclosure to keep the pigs from wandering off and a second trailer was brought in to take the pigs away from the damaged one.

At 9 p.m., motorists were still being advised to use alternate routes.

Officials urged additional caution because driving conditions in the area are poor due to continued snowfall and blowing snow.

Barnesville is located near the North Dakota border and Fargo, and is about 200 miles from Minneapolis.
