Rowan Univ. Senior Killed by Suspected Drunk Driver

Rowan University is full of sorrow after students and staff learned senior Matt Uhl died after being hit by a suspected drunk driver around 12:30 Friday morning.

University officials tell FOX29 it happened as Uhl was walking along State Street with friends, near his fraternity Pi Kappa Alpha.

"Everything he did was right," said friend and senior Andrea Heardman. "There was nothing about him that anybody hated."

Matt Uhl was a senior in Rowan's College of Business. He was also treasurer of his fraternity.

His frat brothers were too emotional to speak with FOX29 having found out he passed away just a few hours before.

Friends say they were praying for Matt once learning he was in the hospital and were stunned to learn of his death.

Meanwhile police arrested suspect drunk driver Derrick Gilliam of Connecticut. They say he had alcohol on his breath and found an open vodka bottle in his car.  Glassboro Police say he was charged with obstruction of justice after refusing to take part in the DWI investigation.

Police are also looking for his passenger. They say he ran from the scene. Authorities also arrested a Rowan University student for obstruction of justice relating to unspecified actions at the crash scene. Gilliam was jailed on $25,000 bail.
