Former players earn grant for Jasper County HS football

MONTICELLO, Ga. -

Like most other Georgia high schools, football is pretty important at Jasper County. Coach Eddie Roberts is building his program there, determined to make the Jasper County High School Hurricanes the best they can be.

But with limited resources, that hasn't been an easy job. The evidence is inside the school.

"You know, we have a great school, beautiful facility out there, and they just ran out of space," said Roberts.

The school's weight room is small, narrow and L-shaped. Players call it a closet, and the equipment inside the weight room is in bad shape, if not broken.

"There's safety issues that we have to be concerned about, but our kids are used to it, and they work hard in here," Roberts said.

Last summer, a group of recently-graduated seniors made a YouTube video, and submitted it for a Muscle Milk Recovery Grant.

The result? They received a check for $12,000.

"The students had graduated already. And we really thought it was special that they took the time to go back and thank the coach and the staff here for having such a big impact on their life," said Muscle Milk's John Paradine.

The check will help pave the way for something better for the players.

"You know, we have great kids that deserve good opportunities with equipment," said school principal Robyn Mullis.

The three young men who put together the video and application were Austin Pierce, Marquell Strozier and Deonte Norwood. Muscle Milk received 600 applications for the recovery grant, and 22 schools were awarded money.
