Drag-racing may have been factor in north Phoenix crash

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

Paramedics have taken an elderly couple to the hospital following a multi-car crash caused by teenagers that may have been drag-racing.

The collisions took place Thursday afternoon near Tatum and Greenway in north Phoenix. Investigators say a teenage driver was speeding and lost control.

He hit a car occupied by an elderly man and his wife. They were pulling out of a parking lot.

In a chain reaction, that car then collided with someone else's vehicle.

Police have taken a teen into custody for a criminal traffic violation.

"Though speed does appear to be a factor, it is premature to say they were drag racing.  We will certainly be looking into this possibility," stated Phoenix Police Sgt. Steve Martos.

The victims' injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.
