From Washington to metro Atlanta, gun control supporters have put pressure on Georgia's senators to support the compromise bill. At the same time, gun owners are making their voices heard right here at home.
Rabbi Elana Perry of Temple Sinai led a roundtable discussion to pressure Georgia's senators into supporting the new background check bill on Thursday.
"Many of their constituents support universal background checks. So, I really think that lots of pressure should be put on them at this time. And I just hope that they'll be listening," said Perry.
She's not alone. Tamara Stevens is a Navy veteran and the daughter of a retired law enforcement officer. She understands the concerns of gun owners and doesn't see anything in the compromise gun bill that infringes on their Second Amendment rights.
"I've voted on both sides of the aisle, but I consider myself to be a very reasonable person. And I would just hope that there are other reasonable people that let their voices be heard," Stevens said.
Adventure Outdoors is one of the largest gun dealers in Metro Atlanta. All News 106.7's Trey Thomas found differing opinions there about the Senate's new background check bill.
"There are already enough steps to legislate, and enough laws in place. You don't need to tighten up background checks. The existing parameters are strong enough," said Philip Purser.
While expanding background checks concerns him as a gun owner, Rob Cooley says Newtown changed everything and something must be done to protect the nation's children.
"I think we're kidding ourselves if we don't think we have to do something because certainly some things are out of control. You know, kids killing kids in school and things like that are way over the top," said Cooley.
The organization Mayors Against Illegal Guns will hold a community event Saturday to call on members of Congress to support the bi-partisan background check bill. It takes place at 11 a.m. at the King Center in front of the reflecting pool.
