Gun control debate continues in Springfield, Pfleger leads rally

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The gun control debate is heating up in Springfield, and some Chicago voices are fighting to be heard. Fr. Michael Pfleger and a group from St. Sabina traveled to the capital to voice their concerns.

They joined the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence for a rally at noon.

They plan to present more than 50,000 signed petitions to legislators asking for improved gun legislation laws.

It's the same topic First Lady Michelle Obama tackled while in Chicago Wednesday. She visited Harper High School, where 29 students have been shot and eight of which have been killed.

Mrs. Obama also spoke about 15-year-old Hadiya Pendelton's death during a luncheon hosted by Mayor Emanuel. She urged the business community to come together to fund programs for at-risk youth.

"I want to say the exact same thing to all of you," the first lady said. "I want to urge you to come together and do something worthy of Hadiya Pendleton's memory and worthy of our children's future."

Mayor Emanuel said Thursday that he wants  to see a comprehensive, criminal background check when it comes to being allowed to own a gun, regardless of where they live or purchase the weapon. He wants to be able to build off of that check, and further strengthen regulation.

"The state is under court order," Emanuel said, "as it relates to concealed carry. I want to preserve the city's ability - so you can't carry a gun on public transportation, you can't carry it into public spaces."
