Hundreds Say Last Goodbyes To Fallen Firefighter

PHILADELPHIA -

Hundreds of people stood in line for several hours Wednesday night to say their final farewells to Battalion Chief Michael Goodwin.

Goodwin was killed Saturday while fighting a fire in Philadelphia's Queen Village neighborhood. Another firefighter was injured in the fire.

The fallen firefighter is being remembered by many as a caring colleague, a dedicated husband and a doting dad and grandfather.

Led by the Philadelphia Fire Department's top brass, Goodwin's casket rode atop Engine 33 as it brought his body to the Givnish Funeral Home in Northeast Philadelphia, where members of his company, Ladder 27, stood in salute.

Mayor Michael Nutter offered consoling words as he presented Goodwin's widow, Kelly, the flag that draped his coffin.

Commissioner Lloyd Ayers called Goodwin a natural born leader and recalled his last conversation with the 53-year-old firefighter.

The viewing will resume Thursday morning until funeral services at St. Michael's Church on East Cumberland Street at noon.

Battalion Chief Goodwin will then be laid to rest at Hillside Cemetery in Roslyn, Pa.
