NYC teachers staying in jobs longer

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - New York City teachers are staying in their jobs longer.

The Wall Street Journal says that more than 80% of public school teachers have five years' experience.

Based on analysis of city data, the Journal says the Bloomberg administration's efforts to keep teachers in jobs longer are paying off.

The administration has offered substantial raises, a housing subsidy, $36 million mentoring program, fellowships and awards.

But the recession also has kept teachers from seeking employment alternatives and forced the education department to reduce hiring.
