DC Police are searching for a suspect after a 16-year-old boy was shot and killed along Langston Place in Southeast, DC early Sunday morning. The victim has been identified as Darius Cannon. According to School Board Member, Trayon White, Cannon was a student at Anacostia High School.
"A good kid, and I don't say that about every kid, but he was a really good kid," said White.
White runs a non-profit focusing on at-risk youth, and says he saw the quiet, 16-year-old just one day earlier, on Saturday. He feels the Woodland Terrace neighborhood and the public housing there need more attention from the city and from police, particularly following this homicide.
"This neighborhood is about two blocks from the 7th District police station. There was a homicide that took place on the street and you don't see one police out here. No detectives out here and it shows a lack of care about young black men in DC. If this was Tenleytown or Georgetown there would be police all around here knocking on doors, trying to get a story, trying to get a witness," said White.
Commander Robin Hoey of the 7th District said in response, "Every murder is a tragedy... every single one. The homicide unit is on this case, working diligently, committed to finding out who killed this young man. Police will continue to work with community members to find out who is responsible."
