For several hours on Saturday, a stretch of beautiful spring scenery in DC was tainted by police tape. Tourists taking photos of Washington's famed cherry trees became citizen journalists, snapping pictures of investigators at work. It was around ten o'clock in the morning that police responded to the discovery of a man's body in the Potomac River near the Arlington Memorial Bridge just steps from the Tidal Basin.
"People come out with their kids and all of a sudden there's police and there's a body pulling out. You see these things on TV, but it's kind of unrealistic... it's kind of discomforting," said Monica Buddana who came with friends to see the cherry blossoms.
Metropolitan Police Department spokesman Araz Alali says it appears the man was in the river for several days. There were no obvious signs of trauma, but investigators are still working to determine how he ended up in the water.
Fox 5 has reported over the past few days that police are looking for a man from Chicago who disappeared while on a trip with his family here in DC. While officials have not yet released the name of the man found this morning, they confirmed it was not that gentleman.
