Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett is calling for higher parking rates in Bethesda.
Parking rates would increase to about $2 per hour at street meters and $1.25 per hour for parking lots under Leggett's plan. Garages would cost 80 cents. The rates currently range from 80 cents to $1.25.
Rick Siebert, the county's chief of parking management, tells The Washington Examiner (http://bit.ly/Z3EabU ) he hopes the new rates would encourage people to use county parking garages and lots instead of on-street parking.
Parking rates in the Silver Spring neighborhood of Montgomery Hill also would increase.
The proposal is scheduled to have a public hearing in the County Council this month. If adopted, the rate increase would go into effect July 1.
