WALDORF, Md. -

A 5-year-old girl was critically injured after she wandered into the back yard of her home in the Waldorf area and was attacked by dogs.

Charles County Sheriff's officials say officers were called to the scene around 6 p.m. Wednesday. Spokeswoman Diane Richardson says the dogs had ripped the cloths off the girl's body, and she was suffering from dog bites, lacerations and other injuries to her face, neck and body.

She was taken to Children's National Medical Center in Washington. Sheriff's deputies said Thursday afternoon that the child's condition had improved.

The girl had recently moved into the home of her mother's boyfriend. The man kept three dogs -- two Presa Canarios and an English bulldog. Two dogs that were found near the girl were euthanized.
