Police investigating rape of woman near apartment complex in Manassas

Posted: Updated:

Police are searching for a man who raped a woman Thursday night in Manassas.

It happened in a wooded area near an apartment complex on Vermont Place.

Police say a 31-year-old woman from Herndon arrived at the Maplewood Park Apartment complex in Manassas at around 11 p.m. Thursday to visit a friend. It is a private development, so she parked on the street. But as she left her car, a man with a gun and a bandana across his face forced her across the road into a wooded area behind a group of townhomes and raped her.

After the assault, the man took off running and the victim was able to go for help. She was treated at an area hospital.

Police responded to the scene with a K-9 unit and searched by helicopter.

On Friday, investigators were back out canvassing the area and handing out fliers with a description of the suspect.

Police say the victim is described as a black male, 5'9" with a medium build, last seen wearing a black, puffy winter jacket, dark gray jeans, and a black and white bandana.
