New Mexico murder suspect on run caught in Phoenix

Posted: Updated:

A 48-year-old man wanted for murder in New Mexico was arrested by U.S. Marshals near 28th Drive and Cactus Road on Thursday.

U.S. Marshal David Gonzales says Johnny Juan Barela was involved with the brutal murder of 45-year-old Gregory Alonzo, who died on March 18 after he was fatally stabbed in Roswell, New Mexico.

A warrant was issued for Barela's arrest on March 19 day, but U.S. Marshals in New Mexico believed he may have fled to Phoenix to hide with his girlfriend.

Phoenix U.S. Marshals used information from their New Mexico counterparts to find an apartment complex where they suspected Barela was hiding.

Gonzalez says officers found Barela at the complex and took him into custody.

Barela was booked into jail and is awaiting to be extradited back to New Mexico.

He faces charges for homicide, bribery and intimidation of a witness.
