Researchers have found that one of the best ways to convince people not to smoke is to appeal to their vanity -- not just telling them to imagine what they could look like after years of smoking -- but actually showing them.
And one company is doing just that.
This company created this software program that shows people what they'll look like after years of unhealthy living.
Schools are using this with kids. They're also seeing a big demand from Fortune 500 companies who want healthier employees to help keep their insurance premiums lower.
The software is called April, and it gives you a glimpse of your potential future self. It shows you just how much of a toll an unhealthy lifestyle can take on your appearance.
Here are some side by side examples. On the left is natural aging, on the right, after years of smoking.
They also have one for obesity as well as sun exposure.
Company president Alex Brown says the reaction from customers is incredible every time.
"I know its cliché to say a picture is worth 1000 words when that picture is you, it shows you aging," says Alex Brown. "It's pretty powerful, it really is quite a powerful tool."
Pediatric News recently posted a study out of Australia. Researchers showed 180 young smokers before and after photos like this, and found one in 7 quit smoking six months after viewing the pictures.
Brown says large companies looking to cut down on health insurance costs are using this software to try and persuade employees to make better choices.
"You want to look your best and I think the whole concept people have around aging can be scary."
