Study: Adults text and drive more than teens

PHOENIX -

It's become the new dangerous thing for drivers over the last decade: texting while driving.

And while a lot of education efforts have been directed towards teens and texting, it turns out, though, they're not the worst offenders -- adults are.

More than 98 percent of those adults, almost all of them, admit they know it's wrong, but still do it.

And six in 10 say they weren't even doing it three years ago.

Everyone knows texting and driving is a dangerous thing to do, but that doesn't stop a lot of us from doing it.

"Yeah, I text and drive -- I'm not going to lie, I do it all they time," said Tyler See.

When asked if she's guilty of texting and driving, Francesca Hinojosa replied, "I am, unfortunately."

A new study by AT&T shows almost half of all adults, 49 percent -- admit to texting while driving, compared with 43 percent of teenagers.

Maria Wojtczack says, "It doesn't surprise me.  It doesn't surprise me at all."

Wojtczack and her husband own Driving MBA school in Scottsdale, where they teach the importance of not texting and driving.

"We get students here who don't want to do it -- and they say well, my mother does it or my father does it. So they'll tell their parents -- mom, dad get off the phone, stop texting while you're driving," she said.

To show just how dangerous it is to text and drive I actually used a simulator and tried to send a text while driving down a road.

It only took a few seconds before I started swerving and then slammed right into the back of the car in front of me when it slammed on the brakes.
