911 caller: 5-year-old fires gun in Gilbert neighborhood

GILBERT, Ariz. -

It was a scary and bizarre sight for people in one Gilbert neighborhood. A 5-year-old walked out into the front yard and fired a gun.

We're hearing the 911 call from the person who called to report the boy.

911 caller: "I was just outside weeding my yard here and I all of a sudden I heard what I thought was a gunshot. I come over next door… there was a little boy that lives next door. I said did you do that and he said uh huh and I see it looks like a Glock 19. I secured the gun."

No one was hurt in the March 16 incident.

The boy was being watched by a babysitter at a home near Lindsay and Guadalupe in Gilbert, but he got into a closet where his parents kept the gun and a shotgun.

Police are reminding adults to talk to kids about the potential dangers of firearms and say it is the gun owner's responsibility to ensure their firearm does not fall into the wrong hands.

They recommend that firearms be stored unloaded in a firearm safe or locker.
