You Paid $45 Million To Settle LAPD Lawsuits

Posted: Updated:
Los Angeles, CA -

(FOX 11) The numbers just are shocking: $1.2 million, $4 million, $2.1 million, $600,000,  $725,000, $3.4 million.

Get the idea? Those are some -- a tiny fraction of -- the amounts that the LAPD ( and therefore the city, which equals taxpayers) have lost in the past 10 years in lawsuits. We're talking verdicts at trial, settlements, racial Harassment, sexual harassment, retaliation, whistle blowers, labor issues, medical discrimination. The list goes on for pages.

On Tuesday we covered the verdict in favor of Earl Wright, an LAPD cop since 1989 who won $1.2 million in his racial harassment suit against the department. A week earlier, the city settled for more than $2 million with a couple of lesbian officers who sued for sex discrimination.

There's either a huge problem in that department or there are a bunch of cops who look at "blue" and see "green" -- or perhaps a little of both.

Over the past 10 years, taxpayers have been on the hook for $45 million dollars. That's about a third of the entire city of Los Angeles' budget deficit.

The LAPD has a "Employee Relations" group to help everyone work together better; they have a "Risk Management" division, which is responsible for trying to minimize liability; and they have a "Legal Affairs Division."

So, how are they all doing? Or maybe the question is how many more lawsuits would there be if those folks weren't there? Is anything going to change?

Or, as LAPD Chief Beck told me the last time I asked him about this issue, "Well, the LAPD is made up of people from the human race and therefore is afflicted with all the ills that society has."

Well, they're also afflicted with the phone numbers of lawyers.
