Cops: Shoplifting Suspect Bites Employee, Tries To Steal Car

Posted: Updated:

A 21-year-old woman was arrested in Wilmington on Tuesday after biting a store employee who was trying to stop her from shoplifting, police said.

Police said Kenyetta Reed, of New Castle, was seen concealing merchandise Tuesday evening on surveillance cameras in the Sears at the Concord Mall. When Reed tried to leave the store, a security employee stopped her and asked her to return to go back inside.

Reed ran from the guard across the parking lot, but was caught by the employee. Police said during the ensuing struggle, a 48-year-old woman driving past stopped her car and attempted to help.

Reed broke away from the pair and got behind the wheel of the assisting woman's vehicle, but was stopped before she could put the car in gear. Police said Reed kicked the woman in the chest and bit the security guard several times before she was finally restrained and handed over to responding troopers.

This was not Reed's first incident with shoplifting, police said. The trooper recognized her from a previous incident when she stabbed an employee in the hand with her keys to steal a pair of boots from a Sports Authority in February.

Reed has been charged with robbery, assault and "offensive touching with saliva." She is being held in Baylor Women's Correctional Institute on $137,000 bail.
