Toe Nail Clippings Being Collected In New Jersey Town

Posted: Updated:
GARFIELD, N.J. -

You normally throw away your toe nail clippings. But one New Jersey town is counting on them and even collecting them.

Kits are being distributed to residents in Garfield.

It's to help scientists determine whether toxins from a former electro-plating factory, which was demolished by the Environmental Protection Agency, are making people sick.

Toe nail clippings are the best way to check for a particular carcinogen linked to lung and intestinal cancers.

Scientists aren't sure if the residents were exposed to the chemical.

The latest data shows no elevated cancer risk for Garfield, but people there are still concerned.
