Fundraiser held for 19-year-old hit-and-run victim

WOODSTOCK, Ga. -

The Woodstock community rallied to raise money for a 19-year-old victim of a hit-and-run accident.

Police say William Heaton hit Emily Bowman with his truck in the early morning hours of February 16 while she was walking with a friend in Athens. Investigators say Heaton fled the scene and they found his truck abandoned nearby with empty alcohol containers inside. He later turned himself in.

Bowman suffered severe injuries and is recovering at Shepherd Center.

Supporters came together to hold a fundraiser for Bowman at the Mellow Mushroom in Woodstock on Tuesday. The owner of the restaurant said that all proceeds from Tuesday's sales will go towards Bowman's medical funds.

Debby Bowman, Emily's mother, said that she hopes her daughter can recover enough so she can stay at Shepherd Center and go through therapy there.

"Everybody that is supporting Emily, it's just amazing and it makes me feel good right here. I can't wait to be able to tell Emily about it, to let her hear what all has been done for her," said Debby Bowman.

The owner of the restaurant said that he decided to hold the fundraiser because Bowman began working there the week of the accident.
