Gary councilwoman to plead guilty to tax evasion

GARY, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Gary Common Councilwoman Marilyn Krusas is close to pleading guilty to one count of tax evasion, according to court records and her attorney.

Deadlines in her case were canceled on Friday because attorneys in the case told the court they had reached a plea agreement.

Her lawyer, Scott King, said he could not comment on the agreement now but that it would likely be filed by next week. No more details on the agreement were available Friday.

Krusas was charged last fall trying to hide a large inheritance of $232,680 despite owing money to the IRS.

Krusas' indictment claimed she hadn't paid federal income taxes for more than 20 years, despite receiving notices of money owed for more than 10 years. She has racked up at least $157,413 in debt to the federal government, according to court records.

Her trial was scheduled to take place April 8. Krusas would automatically lose her seat on the council if she's found guilty, but it's unclear if that happens when she would plead guilty or until a judge would accept her plea agreement, which usually happens at sentencing.
