BELLWOOD, Ill. (FOX 32 News) -

A Bellwood man recovered at a suburban hospital Sunday night after he was shot while walking down the street. He ran for help and ended up in front of a church.

Sundays are filled with song at the Monroe Baptist Church in west suburban Bellwood. Aketha Moore, a nurse who lives in the area, was inside Sunday afternoon and her skills were put to use.

"When I got out of the car and started to come to the church, the young man came running down the street. He was screaming for help and he said he had been shot," Moore said.

According to Bellwood police, the 21-year-old man was shot once in the lower back around 2 p.m. He ran and ended up in front of Monroe Baptist Church.

"I tried to get him into the church, but he collapsed and I saw the blood on him. I started, he told me he was shot and I looked for the bullet wound, I called 911," Moore recalled.

She said police arrived quickly.

"He was conscious and alert on the scene. He did say he was walking at the 800 block of Bellwood Avenue, heard some gun shots and took off running," Andre Harvey, Bellwood Director of Public Safety, said.

The run took the victim from the 3500 block of Monroe Street, directly into the arms of Aketha Moore, to Loyola University Medical Center.

"I was glad that there were no children out because as you see, we have lots of children. We participate in our community a lot," Moore added.

A community that hopes someone will come forward and identify the person who shot and wounded the young man who landed at the church's door.

Investigators spoke with the victim after he got out of surgery Sunday night, but he was unable to provide a description of the shooter, Harvey said.

There was no motive yet for the shooting and no one is in custody. Police continue their investigation.
