LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Movie ticket sales rose 6 percent in 2012 to a record $34.7 billion, thanks largely to the popularity of American films abroad, including a 36 percent increase in ticket sales in China, according to a report by the Motion Picture Association of America.

The chief lobbying arm for the major studios said China last year surpassed Japan as the biggest market outside North America, with sales growing to $2.7 billion.

Revenues in Asia on the whole grew 15 percent to $10.4 billion and rose 6 percent to $2.8 billion in Latin America but fell 1 percent to $10.7 billion in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, according to the MPAA report.

Overall international ticket sales reached $23.9 billion, 6 percent higher than in 2011 and up 32 percent higher than  five years ago.

In the U.S. and Canada, box office revenue was $10.8 billion last year, a 6 percent increase over 2011.
