Authorities say a female pedestrian has died in a hit-and-run in Northeast D.C. Thursday night.
Police say the collision occurred at around 8:30 p.m. in the 1100 block of Florida Avenue.
FOX 5 has learned a woman in her late 60s left a church meeting and was attempting to cross Florida Avenue with two other women, but was struck by an oncoming vehicle. The victim was in a crosswalk. Witnesses tell FOX 5 a light-colored SUV was speeding.
The striking vehicle has been found, and the driver, an adult male, has been located near the vehicle and arrested by police.
New Samaritan Baptist Church officials say the woman volunteered as an usher at the church for nearly 20 years.
Vehicle and pedestrian traffic has been blocked off between the 1100 to 1200 block of Florida Avenue. Police are recommending people to avoid the area and use New York Avenue, H Street and Bladensburg Road as alternate routes.
