Walmart says that a new app could change the way we shop. The iPhone app, called "Scan and Go," is being tested at Atlanta-area stores.
The app allows shoppers to use their phone to scan the barcode of each purchase, place the product in a bag and then check out by scanning another barcode at the self-checkout lane. Customers won't have to take their groceries out of their chart until placing them in their vehicles.
Walmart believes smartphone scanning is the future of shopping. The store liked the results of its tests at local stores. They believe it offers customers a faster checkout and – because the app calculates your purchases as they are scanned – helps stay within budget.
No other retailer has a similar system yet.
"We know that our customers are technologically savvy. We understand that they want their experience here to be fast. They want it to be friendly, And we are ready for it. We've been doing it here in this story since December and it's taken off really well," said store manager Katie Wheeler.
Walmart is rolling out scan and go in other markets after its success in Atlanta.
The app is currently only available on iPhone. Walmart says it will make it available to Android users very soon.
Customers can purchase, special bags for $4 that are designed for "Scan and Go," or they can use the old plastic bags you can pick up on your way in.
And, of course, the registers are still there for those who want to remain old-fashioned.
