Washington's Archbishop, Cardinal Donald Wuerl, is returning from Rome, where he took part in the papal conclave.
Wuerl is expected to return to the Washington area by plane on Wednesday afternoon. This was the first time that Wuerl, who became a cardinal in 2010, has participated in the conclave.
Of the 115 cardinals who elected the new pope, 11 were Americans, second in number only to the Italians.
Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the archbishop of Buenos Aires, was chosen on the fifth ballot and became Pope Francis.
